A Home for Everybody

Affordable Housing as a Human Right

In cities all over the world, housing is becoming unaffordable while homelessness is increasing. Although housing is recognized as an international human right, it often seems to be perceived as a commodity. How can we move away from housing as an investment to a home - a place to live in dignity? What does it mean for policy and practice when we start to imply the right to housing? With among others urban sociologist Saskia Sassen, economist Laurie MacFarlane and gentrification expert Cody Hochstenbach.

During this conference we will elaborate on why we need to rethink the economics of land and housing. We will explore how housing as a human right can be applied in the international, national and local context. This conference will be moderated by Nanke Verloo.

By: Leger des Heils, Gemeente Amsterdam, Cliëntenbelang, HVO-Querido, Rochdale and Amsterdamse Federatie van Woningcorporaties

With Juha Kaakinen (Y-Foundation, Helsinki) we dive into the Finnish Housing First Model. Which lessons can we learn and can be applied in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands)?

2. Community-led housing models: the question of land

Community-led housing models like community land trusts and ‘wooncoöperaties’ in Dutch are being seen as a way to realize affordable housing and apply housing as a human right. However, the availability and affordability of land  is often a complexity in community-led housing models. Can we solve this?

With a.o. Laurie MacFarlane (economist and co-author of the book Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing), Maarten van Poelgeest (catalysator community-led housing models Amsterdam) and Jacqueline Tellinga (urban planner).
