On the longest day of the year, we celebrate the Amsterdam of tomorrow: an Amsterdam for, by and of everyone. The evening of the 21st of June is all about our growing city and by the midsummer sun putting her and her inhabitants in the spotlights. We'll evaluate WeMakeThe.City 2019 - a week full of new insights, ideas and solutions - and look forward to the future. All this takes place on the NEMO rooftop, where New Amsterdam - divers in its nature - mounts the stage and is lauded. At night, we usher in the weekend on the rhythmic sounds of Amsterdam based artists in different clubs. Joya Mooi, Sunshine's Got The Blues, Amartey, Helena Naeff (DJ Hellie Berry) and a Mystery Guest, among others, will take the stage. Note: get to the roof on time, so you won't have to miss a thing!
Amsterdam is growing. She’s changing en moving.
Along with her people, against the current, on the swell of the water. City at the IJ, its heart in the right place. Swirling veins of bikes and jingling trams determining the beat. We move along with her. In different directions, intersecting, in parallel paths, only barely missing each other.
Amsterdam is growing. More colourful by the day, simultaneously older and younger.
She’s a beauty of a city, a safe haven, a dynamic jumble of traditions, histories and perspectives. While moving, we and they meet occasionally, often momentarily. Stopping and staring only happens every once in a while, with a look and a nod. Beyond manners, curiosity remains.
Amsterdam is growing. She sings and she dances and proclaims what she stands for.
Usually, she is behind, caught up by reality, future and idealism. But more often she’s on the vanguard, lifting our spirits and supplying us with ideas. A figurehead of freedom and justice articulated loudly. We’re not they yet, but we’ll get there eventually.
Amsterdam is growing. And we grow with her.
We’re getting better, smarter and kinder. For one another, of one another, by one another, and most of all: with one another. Amsterdam for everyone. Our city.
