István Kenyeres

István started his career as a researcher at the Budapest Technical University, focusing on bioreactor and artificial ecosystem design and bio-refinery processes. After 15 years he left academia, founded and led several successful companies, including Organica Water Inc., which – having introduced an entirely new paradigm to the industry based on his inventions – has become a global player at the cutting edge of the water treatment market. He holds the Silver Merit Cross of the President of the Republic of Hungary for his contribution to the modern environmental industry in Hungary. István closely collaborates with the European Space Agency in its Melissa project, a key initiative to develop closed habitat life support system alternatives both for space and terrestrial applications. His experience in water recycling, resource recovery, and engineered ecosystem design is instrumental both in developing innovative solutions and in the mentoring of the project’s ecosystem design community.

We Make M-ODE: Sustainable Fashion at Westergasfabriek

Fair Fashion is brought to WeMakeThe.City by the M-ODE foundation; a multiple-day spectacle with sustainability, innovation, and socially responsible entrepreneurship at its center. M-ODE will transform the Westergasterrein into the We Make M-ODE event, showing the sustainable future of the fashion industry. The programme will be filled with multiple stage-talks, shows, and presentations by start-ups and more established names. Designer Bas Kosters will demonstrate how he turns Amsterdam’s discarded clothes into a fashion collection, a project for which M-ODE has collaborated intensively with the City of Amsterdam.

In collaboration with West municipal district and WOW ateliers, a sustainable fashion route has been set out through Amsterdam West, starting at the Westerpark, including open studio’s, pop up shops, presentations, workshops, and shows. Together with VondelCS, M-ODE presents pop up shops, a fashion collection made from clothing discarded after Kingsday and the launch of a documentary about couturier Frank Govers.

The We Make M-ODE event and fashion route are accessible to a wide audience.

020 Emission-Free in 2025!

In Project 02025, leaders work together to make Amsterdam champion clean energy. In 2025 – at Amsterdams 750th anniversary – we want to celebrate exuberantly that this has been achieved. An accelerated switch to clean energy is not only a necessity, it also provides Amsterdammers with benefits: clean air, sustainable energy, employment, solidarity, and pride.

We realise that this is only possible through an ambitious and broad collaboration with everyone who’s willing and able. That is why we want to make these people visible and connect and empower them. Over the next few months, we will work towards the official launch of the project during the WeMakeThe.City festival in June. A festival all about the city makers.

Nuon Creates an Energetic City

Nuon will join WeMakeThe. City as a principal partner! Nuon, part of the Swedish Vattenfall, has set a goal to make the city better by contributing to an enjoyable living environment. It is expected that three-quarters of the world’s population will be living in cities by the year 2050. This calls for innovative energy solutions; How do we keep city life comfortable for everyone, without exhausting our natural resources?

Nuon aims at a fossil-free supply of energy within one generation. We look forward to showing you how we strive to reach this goal during WeMakeThe.City.

State of the Region: Celebrating Together, Looking Back and Forward

On Wednesday afternoon, June 20, the State of the Region will come together for the first time in Theater Amsterdam; an annual event organised by MetropoolRegioAmsterdam, Amsterdam Economic Board, and Amsterdam Marketing.

During this day, the most important stakeholders from the industry, knowledge institutions, cultural organisations, and regional authorities will come together to share their vision on, and the results from, the region and to discuss the joint challenges. The purpose of the State of the Region is multiple: informing, inspiring, involving and celebrating successes.

The City is Growing. Join the Development of Neighbourhoods and Areas!

How do we make safe, liveable and sustainable neighbourhoods together? Who are the ones thinking, designing and developing?

What role do the government, project developers, current and new residents and entrepreneurs play in the development process?

Friday 22 June, we focus on the area development in Amsterdam, highlighting the neighbourhoods and areas that are in the middle of full-fledged urban development. Just one example is the Hamerstraat area along the North bank of the IJ River. This former industrial site is being redeveloped into an area designed for living and working. The Sloterdijk business park is another example of an area being transformed into a place where businesses, housing, bars, restaurants and recreation co-exist. What choices are involved in such a redevelopment? Who makes the decisions? And how do we maintain the right balance?

Not only the existing areas are under scrutiny. New development areas bring along their own set of challenges. Districts such as the Port of Amsterdam and Sluisbuurt, areas where over 40,000 houses will be built over the coming years. How do we make these areas sustainable, accessible, and safe?

What significance do placemaking and co-creation have in the development process? And how do physical developments relate to the infrastructural and social elements?

On Friday, experts and professionals from different backgrounds will move into the city on an expedition to more than 30 different development areas throughout the city and region such as the Zuidas, Bajeskwartier, Buiksloterham, and IJburg. After the expeditions, the experts will tackle the various challenges that each of these areas are faced with when being redeveloped.

Rooftop Festival ROEF

Rooftop Festival ROEF shows the sky-high potential of the roofscape in the city. Currently only 2% of the rooftops in Amsterdam are used and just 1% of the flat rooftops are green. While at the same time our streets are getting more crowded. We think we can do better! Discover how, at the ROEF Festival on the best rooftops of Amsterdam.

Follow the birds and hop from roof, to roof, to roof! At ROEF2018 your expedition can go along these rooftops (just to name a few): ABNAMRO CIRCL Paviljoen,  Volkshotel Badplaats, The Student Hotel, Floor 17, Restaurant Bureau, NEMO and QO Amsterdam.

Amsterdam City Event: a Knowledge Day for the Civil Servants of Amsterdam

Amsterdam City Event (ACE) is a knowledge day for civil servants of the City of Amsterdam. Around 1,100 civil servants share their knowledge and expertise through workshops, excursions, and lectures, and gain inspiration from outside their organisation. This year the ACE will focus on ‘building communities’. How do we ensure the rapid growth and development of Amsterdam contributes to a meaningful connection between the old and the new neighbourhoods, and between the new and existing communities? How do we organise public support, participation, contradictions, and involvement? And how can digitalisation and circular thinking contribute to this?

Amsterdam City event is a knowledge day for civil servants. If you have any questions please send an email to cityevent@amsterdam.nl

Docking Station: Stories Need to Be Told

With 9m², it’s the smallest workspace in North Amsterdam. But don’t be fooled by its size. This tiny hub at the IJ waterfront opposite the Tolhuistuin, contains the greatest ideas. Every month, a photographer (Docker) is invited by the photography platform Docking Station to exhibit his or her work. The goal is to move the visual stories of the ‘Dockers’ forward by facilitating collaborations with experts in the field and encounters with likeminded Dutchies. During the festival, the founders of Docking Station will tell and show three of those beautiful stories live on stage, like modern-day troubadours.
